Keep two questions visible
IDA explains that students may need accommodations and explicit instruction. Access to subject content and instruction in writing are related decisions, but changing how an answer is recorded does not itself teach the writing skill.

Describe the demand in the actual activity
This is an original observation prompt, not a diagnostic checklist. Record the assigned task, required response, time spent, assistance and unfinished portion without guessing the cause.
- Was the task asking for handwriting, spelling, composition or subject knowledge?
- What exact response was requested?
- What modeling or other help was provided?
- Which part needs the educator’s assessment?
Illustrative example: a science explanation
Suppose the task is to explain why ice melts. A spoken explanation and a copied sentence produce different records: the first may record the explanation, while the second includes handwriting demands. Ask the educator which response matches the purpose and how to preserve a separate writing-instruction plan. This is a hypothetical task example, not evidence about a particular child or the effectiveness of an accommodation.
Keep the support with the work sample
Label whether an answer was dictated, typed, copied or handwritten and note help actually given. Bring that record to the educator instead of treating assisted work as an independent result.
Plan instruction with an appropriate professional
IDA emphasizes assessment of handwriting and related skills to plan instruction. This page does not select an intervention, diagnose dysgraphia or prescribe a therapy routine.

Official checks before you act
Because homeschool law, special education services, and funding rules vary, verify requirements with your state education department, local district, official ESA or scholarship program, and qualified providers. Keep screenshots or PDFs of official guidance with your records.
Frequently asked questions
Does changing the response format replace writing instruction?
No such conclusion follows from a different response format. Ask the educator how access arrangements and explicit instruction will be addressed separately.
Can this page diagnose dysgraphia?
No. The example and prompts organize observations for a qualified professional.
