Name the service before evaluating the provider

Tutoring, special education instruction, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, behavioral services, counseling, medical care, diagnostic evaluation, AAC assessment, and parent coaching are not interchangeable. Ask the provider to state the service, goals, limits, supervisor if any, referral criteria, and the decisions they are not qualified to make.

Verify credentials without extending what they prove

ASHA’s online verification system lets consumers search its certificate-holder list and confirm ASHA certification. ASHA’s SLP scope document says education, experience, skill, and proficiency vary among providers and that an SLP should practice only within individual professional competence. For any state license, educator credential, other certification, or claimed specialty, use the responsible issuer’s current verification process. A verified credential does not by itself establish fit or guarantee an outcome.

Separate communication access from diagnosis or treatment

Ask how the learner can use speech, gesture, writing, AAC, or another reliable mode during intake and sessions; how refusal and requests for help are honored; and how communication partners are trained. Then ask separately who is qualified to assess, diagnose, or recommend treatment. ASHA places communication and AAC assessment and intervention within SLP practice and describes interprofessional collaboration rather than one provider covering every need.

Optional original question record: provider claim and evidence

Write the provider’s answer and the evidence offered. Use “not provided” or “verification pending” rather than filling a gap. This optional original record is not a rating, approval list, credential check, clinical recommendation, or contract review.

Practical termsFees, billing, cancellation, technology, privacy, records, end-of-service and complaint process

Reject forced-normalization and guarantee language

Ask whether goals serve the learner’s chosen communication, access, participation, safety, or learning needs rather than making harmless autistic traits look typical. ASHA says some autistic traits do not require intervention or change and describes neurodiversity-affirming planning that combines research, clinical experience, and autistic voices. Request the source, population, design, and limits behind any effectiveness claim; do not accept testimonials as a universal result.

Sources for this page

ASHA supports checking its certification, individual competence, SLP scope, AAC access, and neurodiversity-affirming practice; these sources do not verify any named provider, non-ASHA credential, service quality, or promised result. Each optional observation or question record is original SEH editorial material, not a validated assessment, diagnostic instrument, treatment plan, or provider endorsement. The cited sources do not establish homeschooling or Homeschool Momentum effectiveness. This revision remains pending educator review; communication, diagnostic, behavioral, medical, and treatment decisions belong with the appropriately qualified professional and the autistic person or AAC user.

Official checks before you act

Because homeschool law, special education services, and funding rules vary, verify requirements with your state education department, local district, official ESA or scholarship program, and qualified providers. Keep screenshots or PDFs of official guidance with your records.

Frequently asked questions

Does ASHA certification prove that an SLP is the right autism or AAC provider?

No. It verifies the ASHA credential. Ask about current state requirements, relevant competence, the exact service, communication access, methods, evidence, and fit.

Can one provider diagnose autism, select AAC, deliver tutoring, and address every clinical need?

Do not assume that. Ask each provider to identify scope and referral boundaries. Different decisions may require different qualified professionals and collaboration.

Is this question record an educator or clinician review?

No. The page remains pending educator review. The record is original editorial material and does not approve, rank, or endorse a provider.
